As the news of Osama bin Laden’s death filtered out onto the streets of America it triggered unsightly scenes of undiluted hysteria, chest-thumping and back-slapping which has sadly become a trademark of the vengeful ‘hang’em high’ lobby that emerged from the rubble of 9/11.

Senior IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt arrested in Ahmedabad
On a complaint by constable KD Pant that Bhatt coerced him to sign a false affidavit supporting Bhatt’s claim that he was present at a meeting convened by Modi after the Godhra incident.

Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Sanjeev Bhatt, who had submitted an affidavit in the Supreme Court in April saying Gujarat CM Narendra Modi had asked the police to be indifferent to rioters attacking Muslims during 2002-riots, was arrested in Ahmedabad on Friday afternoon. He has been arrested on a complaint by constable KD Pant that Bhatt coerced him to sign a false affidavit supporting Bhatt’s claim that he was present at a meeting convened by Modi after the Godhra incident. Bhatt has maintained that at this meeting Modi instructed senior police officials to allow Hindus to “vent their anger” in communal clashes in which over 1200 people died.

The killing of Osama bin Ladin, may Allah have mercy on him, if proven to be true, may either be a coincidence or part of a strategic manoeuvre by the US and its allies to justify the adoption of new tactics in their ‘war on terror’ that has clearly proven to be counterproductive.

The main minorities in India are Muslims and Christians. At the all-India level, Muslims form close to 15% of the population. There are other minorities like Sikhs and Jains but they are dominant minorities. But among all the Minorities, both in terms of education, economic development and share in both public and private services, Muslims are at the bottom of the ladder. They are the deprived minorities; their share in the national cake is far less than their population warrants.
